It's time to head back to school!
If you're thinking about living in New Orleans with kids, picking a school is a big consideration, and it will likely affect where you focus your house hunt. The charter school system in New Orleans means that you generally don't *have* to live in a particular neighborhood to go to a specific school, but some schools do have a weighted entry system for children living nearby. For those that don't, it's still nice to shorten the commute.
Of the 79 tuition-free charter schools in New Orleans, 7 received A ratings this past year. Let's take a look at each one and review some of the homes for sale nearby!
Benjamin Franklin High School
This top-performing school serves 9th-12th grades and is located on the University of New Orleans campus near the lakefront. Admissions requires an entrance exam. In addition to being well-rated locally, Ben Franklin has been listed as one of the top 100 high schools in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report.
Lusher Charter School
Lusher is the only school in this list that offers schooling from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. This Uptown-based school does require residency in Orleans Parish and also requires an admissions assessment. Lusher focuses on arts-integration and also offers a STEM Jumpstart program in the high school.
Lake Forest Elementary
Lake Forest is a New Orleans East-based charter school that serves kindergarten through 8th grade. This school requires applicants to live in Orleans Parish and uses an entrance assessment to determine admissions. This school does not offer bus transportation but it does offer before and after care.
New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA)
NOCCA is located in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans and is an intensive pre-professional arts-based high school. NOCCA students do not have to reside in Orleans Parish but they do have to compete via audition for entrance to the school. The available programs include classical music, creative writing, culinary arts, dance, drama, jazz, media arts, musical theatre, theatre design, vocal music, and visual arts.
Warren Easton High School
Warren Easton is located on Canal Street in Mid-City. This school only requires that you live in Orleans Parish to be eligible for admissions. In addition to the standard curriculum they also offer dual college enrollment and special career prep in carpentry, electrical, emergency medical services, hospitality/tourism, pre-nursing, computer programming and STEM.
Edna Karr High School
Edna Karr is located on the westbank of the Mississippi river in Algiers. All Orleans Parish residents are eligible but this school gives admissions preferences to students who attended Harte Elementary, followed by students who live in the zip codes of 70114 and 70131. In addition to the standard curriculum they offer special programs in graphic design, computer programming, and video production.
Edward Hynes Charter School
Hynes is a Lakeview school serving kindergarten through 8th grade. This school does an entry lottery that gives preference to kids living in the 70124 zip code. They offer a French immersion program and just this year are expanding to a second campus near UNO.
