Whew, this heat!

Summer is in full swing now and we’ll be feeling it in New Orleans for months. But that shouldn’t stop you from throwing a great backyard bash for Independence Day - or for any other day you feel like it!

Today I’ve got some tips on how to minimize the heat and maximize the fun at your backyard barbecue. And as a bonus - I’ve rounded up a few homes on the market right now with outdoor spaces ready to turn into your party paradise!

Get Your Space Ready

If your guests sitting out in the full sun on a concrete slab, you might have a hard time getting them to come back next year. If you don’t have any good trees for shade in your yard there are other things you can do!

Try a sail shade, build a pergola, or check out some of these other great ideas for adding shade to your yard here

In our heat, shade might not be all you need to keep your guests comfortable. Try adding some durable outdoor fans or even a mister!

Dress Appropriately

This should be automatic for those of us who live here, but sometimes it’s tempting to pull out a cute outfit that doesn’t quite fit the temperature.

Stick with light and airy linens - seersucker is popular in the summer for a reason! If you’re going to be in the sun all day try and pick something that covers more of your body so you don’t have to apply as much sunscreen. And don’t forget a hat!

Cool Down The Menu

Keep thinking cool thoughts when you start planning the menu. Cold salads like this watermelon feta salad, or this avocado-tomato-corn salad are great for keeping the food options light. If you’re feeling fancy, try making your own popsicles

And when it comes to cold drinks... there are plenty of options! Daiquiris are of course a New Orleans favorite and then there is the local beer of the summer, Paradise Park by Urban South. If you’re looking for non-alcoholic goodies check out the selection at World Market, they’re known for having boutique lemonades and italian sodas that you can serve over ice!
